Notes:
Gufuskálar was a fishing station from the 15th century to the 20th. The spot where the boats landed is still visible; you can see the marks made by the keels. The remains of the fishermen’s huts are also visible, and in the nearby lava fiels there are several sheds where the fish were hung up to dry.
The Fiskbyrgi or fish drying shelters are built of dry-stacked lava stone. The numerous small openings allow air to pass through and aid in the fish drying process. The entry employs a larger lava stone as a header. The roof is composed of several large, curved stones that span the interior. The interior clearance is allows one to crawl through the entry and then fully-stand in the interior.
They number approximately 200 in the area; age estimated at 500-700 years old.
